Troubleshooting The Error Message In Your Nokia Mobile Which Says "Expired Certificate"

Provided your application/theme is symbian signed, if you cannot install certain themes/ games/ applications on your Nokia devices, try doing this:
When installing any themes or applications to your Nokia devices such as N95, N80, N91, N73, and N6300 etc. out of the blue you just might see this message: 'Expired certificate!' This is simply because security measures within the Series 60 operating system only let you install themes which are less than six months old. (What a Shame!!)

But all is not lost, because all you have to do is you just have to move the date on your Nokia N Series/E Series back a year, install the theme, then change the date back to normal. (Still cannot follow me? No sweat then, simply read on!). Below is a step by step instruction on how to achieve this.
To change the date on your Nokia N Series or E Series, follow these instructions:

* Click on the Menu button, highlight Tools and click the center selection key (the 'OK' key)
* Highlight Settings and click the OK key
* Highlight General and click the OK key
* Highlight Date and time and click the OK key
* Highlight the date and click the OK key
* Use the Right Navigation key to highlight the year. To change the year back one year, press the Down navigation key once.
* Press the Red 'End' key to return to standby mode.

And voila! Now install your new theme and the chance it should be installed all smooth is 99.99% (Unless you are one of those real unlucky guys who is just plain unlucky in a trillion of odds!).
If you still see the Expired certificate error, change the year back another year and try installing again. (Trust me! It also works sometimes, just trust me!!)

When it is installed successfully and you are all happy go lucky, REMEMBER to follow the instructions again, setting the year back to the present by highlighting the year and pressing the Up navigation key once (this is to ensure that you are not late by one year the next day to wherever you might be going!!)

Remember all themes have one year certificate validity so after one year you have to do this to keep using your most favorite mobile theme to be used on your cool cell phone. And you are done!
Now to try this with a new theme: Click here.
Now to try this with a new application: Click here.
So from next time there should not be any problem to make your theme or application running smoothly all the time!

What are SIS files?

The .SIS extension identifies an installer application used for Symbian operating systems. SIS stands for Symbian Installation System or Source and it provides a simple and consistent user interface for installing applications, data, or configuration information to Symbian OS devices. End users install components packaged in Symbian OS Installation (.sis) files either from a PC using connectivity software, or from a Symbian OS phone using an on-board installation program. The Symbian operating system is used by a range of mobile devices and hence could be associated any one of a large number of brands of mobile phone.
What is Symbian OS?
Symbian OS is an open project operating system, which was mainly developed for the use on smart mobile phone devices. The development of the Symbian OS was spawned by a joint partnership in 1998 by big name companies such as Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola, Samsung, and Psion. This venture was proposed in order to exploit the convergence between PDAs and mobile phones, creating a new hybrid phone which is called a PDA phone or a smart phone with greater functionality and sophistication. In 2008 Nokia announced that they intended to acquire the rest of the Symbian shares, trademark and name.
The first version of the Symbian OS was named EPOC and was designed by Psion. It runs exclusively on ARM processors.

How to create SIS files? (For developers)
The tools mentioned here are all mentioned on the Symbian website. Four tools are provided to enable developers to create installation files.
  • CreateSIS, is a wrapper for MakeSIS, SignSIS and MakeKeys
  • MakeSIS, the Installation File Generator, creates the installation files from a specification provided in a package file.
  • MakeKeys, the Certificate Generator, creates private/public key pairs, which are used by SignSIS to digitally sign installation files.
  • SignSIS, the Installation File Signer, digitally signs installation files with a specified key.
How to install SIS files on your mobile device?
A file with extension SIS is an installation file for Symbian OS, and not an application file, as sometimes believed. The proper Symbian application is the .APP file. The .APP file is generated whenever the SIS file is installed on your mobile device.

Since the introduction of Platform Security (PlatSec) in Symbian OS v9.1, the number of rules to follow in order to get an application installed has increased almost exponentially, to the point where it has become quite difficult to remember them all. This fact, coupled with the poor feedback provided by the S60 and UIQ installer User Interfaces, and often confusing advice from various sources often leads to intense frustration.

Nokia E61 For Media Entertainment

Nokia E61 first came to the market, but the people's reception to that Nokia baby was not so warm. E61 was Nokia's first attempt to match other smart phones like RIM's Blackberry 8700/8800 and Palm Treo's 680/750/755p models. It is the first Nokia QWERTY communicator device. The problem that came with E61 was with the usability and there was an unclear product focus. Nokia tried to simplify E61 by taking away E61's WI-FI capability and few other programs, thus coming up with the E62.

In an effort to correct the original issues with E61, and to give the market another option for smart phone besides Treo and Blackberry, Nokia Released the E61i model.

Nokia's difference with RIM and Palm is that it puts in its devices "being a phone" first. RIM focuses on email devices while Palm on organizer devices. E61i has a great voice quality. It operates well in both speaker phone and handset modes and there will only be a little distortion if the voice will be maxed out. Although it has a very sensitive microphone that easily catches background noise.

E61i has an excellent battery life and perhaps, it is its most striking aspect. It uses a 1500mAh battery that could last for 2 to 3 days. That is, even if it's user will be online all the time. Having to go somewhere minus the phone charger can definitely give one a lighter luggage.

E61i uses the Nokia Active Standby screen that is similar to Windows Mobile Today that makes it screen looking brilliant in all light settings.

As a communicator device, it has a desktop quality web browser that includes office applications. It also has emailing and text messaging features plus its multimedia capability that includes a 2.0 mega pixel camera. It also uses Nokia's Webkit-based browser that supports nearly every web standard, and even handling some flash that is suited for a QVGA screen. It has the Gallery application that is also present in the N95 model. It is the scrolling application that shows the thumbnails of the still photos and videos taken on the phone. It is one application that really looks good on E61i.

Other applications that are in E61i are Quick Office, Adobe Acrobat LE, Adobe Flash Player, ZIP Manager, Nokia Search [for entire device searching] and the usual Symbian/S60 PIM suite [contacts, calendar, to-do, and notes]. The email and text messaging are handled by the messaging application. The messaging application has folders for any personal mail account, text messages and an exchange mail account that is similar to Versa Mail on Palm Treo.

We can say that Nokia's attempt to improvise E61 was really successful. E61i is one gadget that can be enjoyed by people who do both playing and working on their mobile phones. It is one comprehensive device that gives you the Settings Wizard once you insert your Sim card. The Settings Wizard gives the guide on how to set-up the data feature of the phone. Such feature is so user-friendly.

Other interesting feature of the E61i is that it can download the Microsoft Exchange integration through Nokia's Mail. Microsoft Exchange is a free download that synchronizes calendar, contacts and email with the exchange server. E61i can also be connected to a computer through PC Suite. PC suite is a complete device manager that can sync, install and connect to Nokia Life Blog and update the phone if there is anything that needs to be updated. E61i is also compatible with a Bluetooth headset that is supported by A2DP that makes gives you the feel that you are wearing a regular two-ear headpiece. Like many mobile devices, the E61i uses a proprietor interface connector for syncing the Nokia pop-port. Like Palm's multi- connector, it is a sure connector.

Nokia E61i have its own share of shortcomings as a device, but just considering the battery life and its features in the communicator field, E61i will really qualify as a smart phone, user-friendly and just less PDA-ish. Find one in the market and furthermore, check this phone's capability.

The Future of Google Android

Google Android is a complete software system which can be adopted to mobile devices like cell phones, PDAs etc. It is developed by a consortium of many leading players in the consumer electronic segment such as Google, HTC, Intel, LG, Motorola, Samsung and many others. Initially it was Google who started the process of developing it in an endeavor to provide open standard for mobile services. Other entrepreneurs joined Google to form the consortium named Open Handset Alliance (OHA).

The first Android mobile device platform built on the Linux kernel version 2.6 was soon introduced. This achievement of Open Handset Alliance earned the promoters accolades of others like Sony, Ericsson, Toshiba Corp, and Vodafone who also joined the consortium. By the end of 2008 Android was made available for the users as an open source. The platform is found adaptive to larger VGA, 2D and 3D graphic library and MP3 players based on an open general license.

The new operating system has many takers. Acer has already announced the production of Android handset. Similarly Samsung and Vodafone are also contemplating on the introduction of Android Handsets. Many others may follow suit if the market sources are to be believed. Hewlett-Packard Company is in the process of manufacturing small computers or net books adopting the software developed by Google led consortium. Many other leading manufacturers have expressed their options to make use of Android based devices taking advantage of the multiple platforms offered by the new technology.

The consumers can expect more products in the market based on the Google Android, as efforts are being undertaken to produce them with active support from the hardware makers all over the world. Linux net books and embedded systems are expected to reach markets soon. Other innovative products are Home phones and Tablet Computers both from T-mobiles. It is indicative of the fact that market competition will be stiffer between these products and those of Microsoft. Google, which is playing a dominant role in the internet search platform, has now to face the Microsoft, a monopoly player in the computer segment. But Microsoft is so far safe from potential competitors. However market watchers are cautious when pointing out that Android based Net books may make dents on the Microsoft's profits.

Many of the leading PC makers are planning to use the Google Android operating system. The emerging trends in the contemporary markets are indicating the upsurge of Google Android as a complete software stack for mobile devices. As in the case of other technologies, there are ample prospects for Google Android as it is redefining the concepts of handsets as well as other wireless devices in the consumer electronic segments. Some market watchers are optimistic to predict that Android will capture a significant market share in the near future despite Microsoft.

N-Gage Un-Caged

Now some of you may remember the old Nokia N-Gage mobile phone come mobile gaming device from five years ago - it was a big clumsy looking gaming device with phone features. Sadly it did not take off, probably because even the most hardcore gamers didn't want to carry a brick around with them! Now Nokia have revamped N-Gage and made it into a platform, which can be downloaded to 'normal sized' Nokia mobiles. This will no doubt make it more appealing, and get N-Gage more fans.

The N-Gage platform can be downloaded to the Nokia N81, N82 and N95 currently, but it is expected that more N-Series handsets will be added to the list shortly. And once you have N-Gage on your mobile you will be able to download games and play online with other mobile gamers.

The N-Gage platform is promising to be a cross between iTunes and the Xbox Live community for gamers. A couple of great points about the new N-Gage is that it will be much easier to find a game you like, as buying games through your operator or network is often complicated and it can be difficult to navigate the menus to find the game you want. Nokia's N-Gage will also make it possible to play a short demo of each game before you buy it, which is certainly a new idea to mobile gaming.

Some of the games currently available are Fifa 08, Brain Challenge and World Series of Poker Pro Challenge, games will cost between £4.50 and £8.00.

Symbian OS Dominates The "Smart Mobile Device" Market

One of the emerging trends in mobile marketplace has been the increasing adoption of smartphones. When we talk of smartphones, Symbian is the first word that comes to our mind since it has taken over 70% of the existing smartphone market. Symbian OS is an open operating system that powers the most popular and advanced smartphones from the world's leading handset manufacturers. Symbian licenses Symbian OS to the world's leading handset manufacturer like for example Nokia and some other leading names such as Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Fujitsu, LG Electronics, Motorola, Mitsubishi Electric, Sharp and others.

Symbian has all those salient features that make it stand apart from other operating systems. It targets mass market by providing a wide range of products with wireless connectivity and offers an open platform for independent software developers. It has maintained a continuous focus on improved user experience, by keeping in mind the diverse individuality of different users. Other than this, the phones with Symbian operating system include basic features such as calendars, contacts, messaging, push email and web browsing, but can also extend easily to any enterprise information system.

Looking at the sole success of Symbian phones it is found out that 20.4 million Symbian smartphones have been shipped in quarter 3 of 2007. Symbian is also the leading OS for smartphones in China with a market share of 60% in Q2 2007. The robustness, security and ease of customization of Symbian OS contributes greatly to the possibility of short development time for a wide variety of handsets making it over 30 million Symbian smartphones shipped in Japan up until the end of November 2007.

In the previous few months, we have been witnessing some major industry changes in which Google has launched a new operating system called as "Android". Android is built from ground up with the goal of being the first open, complete and free platform. It has managed to gain a broad developer base and industry support from the leading companies such as T-Mobile, HTC, Qualcomm, Motorola and many others. Some leading mobile operating systems of mobile communication industry such as Symbian and Microsoft have still denied in becoming a part of it.

Nokia has remained a global market leader that uses Symbian OS. A recent rumour has been that Microsoft is trying to grab Symbian's share by convincing Nokia to move to Windows mobile OS. Although Microsoft still has quite less chance of becoming successful since they share only meager part of smartphone market. But we have to consider the fact that if Nokia shifts towards Microsoft, how this will affect the dominance of Symbian OS. However for the moment, it is indeed pleasing to find that Symbian OS - based smartphones have gained immense amount of popularity in a very short time and they truly have a great beneficial and positive impact on the mobile industry.

Choosing Between Nokia 6300 and Nokia 6220 Classic

Nokia is dedicated to enhancing people's lives and productivity by providing easy-to-use and secure products, such as, mobile phones and imaging, games, media, mobile network operators and business solutions. The following compares features of the Nokia 6220 Classic and the Nokia 6300.

Operating System: The 6220 is equipped with Symbian 9.3 S60, 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2 user interface. The 6300 is equipped with Symbian S40.

Network: The 6220 (Quadband) works on more networks (850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA, 900/2100) than the (Triband) 6300 (850/900/1800/1900). Due to the frequency used in some locations, if you are an AT&T user, this could be an issue.

Battery: Batteries are fairly comparable, providing similar talktime minutes (210 m.). However, the 6300 provides the user with more standby (348 m.) time.

Camera: Both mobile phone models have a camera. However, the 6220's 5-megapixel, Zeiss T lens, and xenon flash surpasses the 6300's 2-megapixel resolution and 8x digital zoom. Additionally, the 6300 has no flash. The 6220 also has a second embedded CIF camera for 3G video calling the 6300 does not have, although the 6300 has video recording capabilities the 6220 does not have.

Bluetooth, USB, GPS: The 6220 has 3G HSDPA connectivity including Bluetooth 2.0, USB mass storage, 2.5mm AV connector, 2mm DC jack, and TV-Out. Unfortunately syncing the handset with the (Mac) iSync has been difficult. The 6300 has Bluetooth 2.0, no GPS, but does have a charging port, a 2.5mm headphone jack and a mini-local USB that connects to your PC, eliminating the need for the proprietary Nokia USB cable. The 6300 has a plugin to make it work with iSync.

JAVA, FM Radio, Music Player: The 6220 has 64-voice polyphonic ringtones / MP3 & AAC ringtones, music player (MP3, AAC, ACC+, eAAC+ and WMA formats, OMA DRM version 2.0) and RDS FM radio. The 6300 also offers 64-voice polyphonic ringtones, MP3, and True Tones, and has MIDP Java 2.0 with additional Java APIs. It also features Macromedia Flash Lite 2.0 for interactive video, audio and graphics use for FM stereo and visual radio and music file format.

Emailing/Messaging, Organizing, Handsfree: The 6220 has SMS, MMS, email with attachments. The user has access to voice dialing and voice commands. Contacts, organizer with calendar, to-do list and notes, alarm clock, and countdown timer (normal and interval timer) are also included features. The 6300 similarly has SMS/EMS, MMS, and e-mail messaging with T9 predictive text, but without the other features.

Memory: The 6220 has a larger, our-of-the-box memory than the 6300. The 6220 has 120 MB plus microSD memory card slot (1 GB supplied; expandable to 8 GB), expandable up to 8GB with a microSD card. The 6300 has a 7.8 MB out-of-the-box shared memory that is expandable up to 2GB with a microSD card.

In general, the Nokia 6300 is a simpler and less expensive cell phone than the Nokia 6220 Classic, which could account for its popularity. The 6220 offers more and expanded features. And the 6300, although comparable on many fronts, does not have as expanded features. In fact, its primary drawbacks are its small, out-of-the-box memory and inconvenient USB port. However, for the money, the features it does offer typically get high (4-star) ratings for functionality, usability, and ease of operation. Its then is left up to the consumer to decide which features are the most important to him or her.

Mobile Phone Buying Guide - 5 Things You Must Consider!

Mobile phones are available with tons of features these days. But have we ever stopped to think which features are important to us and which might not be? I'm sure over the course of many years, all of us have bought at least one mobile phone which we would have regretted buying. Even though most of us go through so many reviews that are available online, we still want to get the latest and greatest mobile phone only to find that it does not fit our lifestyle. Well in order to address this, this article will describe 5 things that you must consider before buying your next mobile phone. Keeping these 5 things in mind while reading your next mobile phone review will greatly help you to understand the review better and choose your next gadget wisely.

1. Form Factor

Mobile Phones basically come in 3 form factors: Candy Bar, Slider and Flip. You need to choose wisely which one of these will suit you. Some of us prefer to just have a candy bar which is the easiest to use, but one potential drawback is that you could accidentally press one of the keys and could be dialling someone overseas. So setting the phone to auto keypad lock is very important. Slider and Flip phones are generally better looking than Candy Bar phones and do not leave the keypad exposed.

Another key point is to consider what size you are most comfortable with. Slider and Flip Type mobile phones are generally smaller than Candy Bar phones and can fit easily into your pockets. If you like to flaunt your physique and generally wear tight jeans, it would just make sense to go for Sliders and Flip Types. This also will ensure that you dont accidentally press any keys on a Candy Bar phone while you are pulling the mobile phone out of your tight pocket.

2. Screen Attributes

Screen attribute is the next thing to watch out for. What kind of screen are you looking for? A normal mobile phone screen with no bells and whistles? Or a touch screen? If you are a heavy text message user, you should go for phone with no touch screen but one which offers a keypad instead. This is the most easiest and fastest way to type those text messages. Touch screens offer 2 types: Using a stylus and using your bare fingers. Stylus is good for people who use their mobile phones as PDAs and would like to take quick notes during meetings. Its also a very good fit for those who are looking for handwriting recognition. But if you are not using your phone to scribble any notes during those meetings and would still like a touch screen, then you should go for those mobile phones where you can use your fingers on the touch screen. Stylus operation can be cumbersome at times and this might be a good alternative.

One major point to note about the screen of your phone is how well it performs under direct sunlight. If you are constantly on the move and use your phone outdoors most of the time, choose a mobile phone whose screen performs well under sunlight. Most mobile phone screens don't! This is one factor which is not considered in mobile phone reviews - so watch out! Do some research yourself.

3. Connectivity

Next we look at what kind of connectivity we are looking for in the mobile phone. Is it 2G, 3G or Wi-Fi? Well it all depends on your usage and your data plans as well. If you are one who tends to surf the web like I do, go for a 3G phone. But you should also take your data plan into consideration here. Unless you are not on an unlimited data plan I suggest you don't choose a 3G phone. It's going to cost you a bomb! If you still want to surf the internet, then go for a Wi-Fi phone. But then you will need to find a Wi-Fi hotspot every time you want to connect to the internet and surf. Wi-Fi phones are also very good for those who intend to run VoIP software to make calls (like Skype).

4. Operating System

This is a very important attribute of a mobile phone - what OS does the phone run on? It could be Windows Mobile, Symbian OS or Apple's proprietary OS which runs on a Unix platform. The look and feel is one important factor here. Another thing is whether you will be running a ton of applications. Some Operating Systems are more stable than others, so it depends on your usage. Some Operating Systems give a better look and feel to the mobile phone itself. But if you choose a phone with the wrong operating system for your usage, you might just end up crashing the phone!

5. Applications

Last but not least, do some research on what applications are available for your next mobile phone. These could be applications available from the manufacturer or from third parties. Look at the quantity and quality of applications available. Some might want to download games while some others might be looking for financial software applications. So if your mobile phone does not support the applications that are essential for your lifestyle, stay away from the phone. Choose one which suits your lifestyle.

I hope that the above 5 points will guide you in your next mobile phone purchase. Give it a bit of thought; write in a piece of paper. Choose your next mobile phone wisely keeping these points in mind. I'm sure that you will not regret your next purchase. Don't forget to check out some of the other cool stuff that is available on my blog. Have Fun!

Symbian Mobile Phones

A phone using the Symbian operating system is able to integrate several software applications at once, such as word processors, internet browser and email. The first phone on the Symbian OS was the Nokia 9210. It was launched in 2000 and was a fairly ordinary-looking handset with the old style black-on-green screen and simple keypad...at first glance.

Opening it up revealed a full QWERTY keyboard and colour screen, almost like a mini laptop. It could be used to send emails, browse the internet and it featured a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation viewer and file/contents manager. All this from a fairly basic-looking handset.

Since the 9210 the Symbian OS has appeared on several new handsets, with more and more software being developed to make use of them. A regular feature on the Symbian OS is the ability to send and receive emails as well as access instant messaging, full internet access and even hook the handset up to your TV.

Nokia seems to have cornered the market in Britain when it comes to Symbian phones, with handsets in all shapes and sizes from clamshells to sliders to PDA's. There's even a handset which looks like a small camcorder; the Nokia N93i is capable of video capture of DVD quality, as well as mobile TV software to turn it into a portable television.

But Nokia are by no means the only manufacturer to jump on the Symbian bandwagon. Ericsson, LG, Samsung and Motorola all have handsets carrying this technology too. The Motorola Z8 also carries yet another new feature; a 'kick-slider'. This means that when the phone slides up, it forms a curve which fits the shape of your face letter than a standard handset would. Not exactly a feat of modern technology, but sometimes the simplest things are the best.

While Symbian phones are the top end of the technology spectrum at the moment, they're still reasonably priced. Some are even available on a pay as you go tariff, for those who don't want to be tied to a monthly package. Look on the internet and mobile phone retailers for the best deals.

NOKIA N70 3G PHONE

Description

The Nokia N70 is the successor of the popular 6680. Similar to its predecessor, it is built for the WCMDA/GSM 900/1800/1900 networks. The N70 comes bundled with a 64 MB MMC card in the sales package which you can transfer files. It also has Bluetooth connectivity. The N70 is also based on the Symbian OS, making the phone an open platform for the most variety of applications written in Java or Symbian. The phone supports the following formats JPEG, MP3, PPT, DOC, XLS, and PDF. The major improvement over 6680 is its 2megapixel camera that can be used for video sharing and recording or camera using the smooth 20 x digital zoom, integrated LED-based flash, and high-quality lens provided, it also supports Nokia XpressPrint printing solution makes producing great prints of images. You can even hookup a Keyboard to the phone using Bluetooth. Measuring just 108.8 x 53 x 17.5 mm, the Nokia N70 is the smallest ever 2 mega pixel 3G smart phone based on the leading Series 60 Platform. It is also lighter than the 6680.

Features

From a technical perspective, it's a GSM 900/1800/1900 phone. The N70 also comes with integrated Bluetooth and supports Pictbridge printing for ease of photo printing. On the software side, the N70 supports visual radio applications, comes with RealPlayer installed as well as a small suite of business-type applications. Of all the N series mobiles, this is the one that you're most likely to convince your manager to buy you for the office, if only because the leisure applications are better hidden than with the clearly musical or photo aspirations of the other N series mobiles. Connectivity is once again provided by Nokia's PC Suite Software. Like the N90, the N70 features a 2.0 Mega pixel camera with a surprising amount of clarity for a mobile phone camera. The N70 offers up to 22MB of internal memory for storage. With the quantity of downloadable 3G data out there, not to mention the phone's inbuilt music and photo offerings, that's likely to be gobbled up rather quickly. For additional storage the N70 uses RS-MMC (reduced size Multimedia Card). The slot for these is on the right hand side of the phone, and our test sample came with a 128MB RS-MMC card.

Specifications

The specifications of Nokia N70 include; Phone Type Symbian OS 8, Network Supporter WCDMA/TriBand GSM 900/1800/1900, Wireless Technology 3G, WAP, GPRS, Java, MMS, Bluetooth, Video streaming, Video calling/sharing, LCD Display 176 x 208 pixels, Colour Yes / 262K Colour TFT, Form Factor Candy Bar, Dimensions 108.8 x 53 x 17.5 mm, Weight inch Battery 126g, Battery Power Rating Nokia BL-5C 3.7v 900 mAh Li-Ion, Max Talk time 4 hrs, Max Standby Time 240 hrs, Digital Camera / Video 2 mpixel, Max resolution 1280x960, Video 3GP, Ringtone MIDI, MP3, AAC, AMR, Real player, PDF reader, Storage 64M RS-MMC external storage provided

Conclusion

Nokia's N70 isn't half bad. Unlike so many 3G phones - including N80 - it's neither chunky nor gawky. It's got the slick look of Nokia's business phones coupled with a consumer-friendly feature set. The camera's good and there's a nice music player for your MP3s - it supports iTunes-friendly the AAC format too, though not songs downloaded from Apple's online music store. Sure, it has its idiosyncrasies - size, the lack of flight mode - and the battery's life could be (much) better, but the N70 won me over despite that. A great all-rounder.

Nokia N93 - An All-In-One Device

The new Nokia n93 is a portable music player, a digital camera, and a 3g smart phone combined into one. It has something for everyone--for the music freaks, for the photography buffs, and for the Internet savvy.

N93 has got so many features that one finds oneself at a loss where to start. Let us first discuss the design of the phone. The phone’s twist-and-flip design allows the user to keep it in four different positions. You can keep it one position for taking photographs and shooting videos, and view the photos and the videos in another position. For calling you just have to fold open the phone. There are two displays: internal and external. The external screen is for displaying basic information like time, date, etc. the internal display is brilliant (TFT screen with 262K colours). The keypad has one-touch keys for the camera, zoom, and flash etc. making it easier for the users to use the phone. Save the weight of the phone, the design is immaculate.

The camera of Nokia n93 is perhaps the best one to have been incorporated in a mobile phone till date. At 3.2 mega pixel (2048x1536 pixels), it is capable of taking high-resolution photographs. Other remarkable features of the embedded camera are Carl Zeiss lens, auto focus, macro mode, integrated flash, and auto exposure. These features could earlier be expected only in special digital cameras. It is a surprise therefore for many that Nokia has been able to incorporate these features into the camera of a phone.

The video recorder of the Nokia N93 is not far behind the camera when it comes to features. It allows you to shoot videos in the MPEG-4 or 3GP format. The resolution is good and the phone also allows you to shoot videos of up to 60 minutes duration. So you can now make your own movies with the phone and earn admiration for yourself!

Coming to the music player, it supports a variety of file formats like MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC, and WMA. The sound output with the supplied stereo headphones is outstanding. The music player also supports play lists and equalizer. There is a stereo FM radio as well with visual radio support. No surprise, therefore, that some music freaks are going for the phone just for the music features.

Other features of the incredible Nokia N93 are:

SMS, MMS, and E-Mail

MP3 ring tones

Voice recorder

Integrated hands-free speaker

Push to talk

Java and Symbian applications

Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, infrared, wireless LAN,

Web browser

Perhaps nothing is missing from the phone. For people who are willing to put up with the weight and bulk of the phone, and are ready to pay a heavy price, it’s the ideal phone.

Lets Talk About S60, the Leading Smartphone Platform in the World

When we buy a shiny new Nseries device, we play with it, we browse internet with it, we make phone calls with it etc... But you never asked yourself what OS (Operative System) is running inside them to make them so powerful? A smartphone is like a computer, in fact it *is* a computer, and as HPs run Windows XP/Vista and iMacs run OSX Leopard, the Nseries devices run S60 3rd Edition and more recently S60 5th Edition. Wait, where is the 4th Edition? you might ask. Well Nokia decided ''as a polite gesture to Asian customers'' skip the 4th because 4 is an unlucky number for some Asian cultures.

Anyway, so far we have S60 3rd Ed and S60 5th Edition. Lets start with S60 3rd Edition.
The S60 3rd Edition is as its name says the 3rd edition of S60, there was S60 then S60 2nd Edition and then the most popular, loved, and widely used the S60 3rd Edition. This edition of S60 is to date the most widely used edition of S60, an amazing 46 devices use the 3rd Edition compared to the 13 devices that run the 2nd Edition and the 7 devices that used the S60 (1st Edition). And what exactly is S60? S60 is a software platform, a software platform runs over an OS (Operative System) in this case Symbian. Basically S60 is what runs on the top of Symbian that makes Symbian usable through S60. The S60 is an user interface, and for those who don't know what an user interface is, it is the way that the man (us) communicate with the machine (Smartphones).

And why is S60 so popular? As the slogan from S60 says ''S60 is open to new features'' or ''Open to anything''. The great aspect about S60 is that we can install 3rd party apps easily. With an S60 device users can have more than 100 unique applications and each one does something different to make the device the ultimate tool for almost everything.

An important thing to have in mind is that S60 3rd Ed is a button-only interface, there is no support for touch screen and to date the maximum resolution it supports is QVGA (Quarter Of VGA) which is 240x320 pixels and consequently the maximum acceptable display size is 2.8 inch because if the size gets bigger then the images produced by the screen will look really bad and pixelated. And in an era were touch screen devices with screens of 3.5 inches and with 320x480 of resolution exist, well Nokia was not doing well, isn't it? That was until the S60 5th Edition came and save the day! The 5th Edition of S60 was announced in October of 2008 with the Nokia 5800. This device being mid-range sports a 3.2 inch touch screen with 360x640 pixels of resolution! And that was not the end of it, 2 months later Nokia surprised, rocked, amazed, everyone with a 3.5 inch with 360x640 resolution screen device!! On top of that it has a QWERTY keyboard, 32GB of Built-in memory, 5 Megapixel Camera, GPS and the list goes on for quite a while. This device is the Nokia N97, Nokia's greatest flagship of all times. The 5th Edition is THE new platform, with this platform we probably will see the greatest Nseries devices ever. The N97 is a start, an excellent start. Nokia and S60 reaffirmed themselves as the leaders in mobile technology with the N97, there is no device or OS better than the new N97 and S60 5th Ed.

I hope this short but condensed article explained you in an easy way the basics about S60, Nokia and Nseries.

Mobile Viruses And your Symbian Devices

Mobile Viruses....Whats the damage? Whats the antivirus ?

Whats the threat?

Imagine if someone were to erase your phone book - or worse still, steal it?

Imagine if someone were reading your text messages and personal emails - how would you feel?

Imagine if someone could trace your bank details, or other sensitive information from your phone.

Imagine if someone could add just 10p a month to your bill. Would you notice? How much could they regularly take from your account before you would be alerted to it?

Imagine if someone stole your identity? Without virus protection you run the risk of ID theft, these details are easy to obtain from your mobile.

Imagine if you simply could not use your phone.

This list above is what is under threat by a mobile virus getting into your cell or symbian devices, once in your Phone, PDA , Pocket Pc or what ever you call you device any or all of the above could happen.

Many Of the Threats Listed Below can be avoided by being careful what texts and emails you open. Have you ever received a text message offering a free mp3, software download or something more suggestive? you may have downloaded a virus.

Here are some examples Of the viruses out there and what they do

Doomed : What does this virus do?

This virus arrives disguised as an installer for a normal application, when run it stops normal applications on your phone from working, prevents your phone from restarting properly and introduces and runs SymbOS/Skulls, SymbOS/CardBlock, SymbOS/CardTrap, SymbOS/Fontal, SymbOS/CommWarrior and SymbOS/Cabir. The virus can also sometimes cause other Bluetooth devices in the vicinity of the infected one to restart.

SymbOS/Doomed arrives as a SIS installer disguised as a normal application. Some known applications it uses for cover are:

Double Process Speed v6.1.3 by DFT
Effects v1.05 by Dj 6230
exoVirusStop v2.13.16
Doom 2

It usually has three primary payloads:

  • Disable normal applications
  • Prevents proper phone boot
  • Drops and executes other Symbian viruses
CommWarrior : What does this virus do?

This virus will reset your phone on the first hour of the 14th of every month. It spreads using Bluetooth and MMS utilising your phonebook contacts to send the MMS to.

SymbOS/CommWarrior is the first known mobile malware that spreads via both Bluetooth and Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). It can also be downloaded from malicious web sites as an archive file named COMMWARRIOR.ZIP.

It affects phones running the Symbian S60 platform. Some phones affected by SymbOS/CommWarrior include the following:

Nokia 3650, 3600
Nokia 3660, 3620
Nokia 6600
Nokia 6620
Nokia 7610
Nokia 7650
Nokia N-Gage
Panasonic X700
Sendo X
Siemens SX1

Bluetooth Propagation

Once running in a device, SymbOS/CommWarrior searches for other phones with Bluetooth. Once a target phone is found, it sends a randomly named SIS file to the target.

The SIS file enters the target phone’s Inbox attached to a message. When the message is opened, it activates the SIS file and installs the following:

!:systemappsCommWarriorcommwarrior.exe
!:systemappsCommWarriorcommrec.mdl
